Keeping mature aquariums

Maintenance of the biological system of a mature aquarium

Once the bacterial population is established and the aquarium appears healthy, the availability of carbon sources can become a limiting factor for bacteria to efficiently perform the nitrogen cycle at the required pace. This limitation can lead to a notable increase in nutrients, resulting in elevated concentrations of NO3 and PO4.

To address this issue, it is crucial to periodically replenish bacterial strains. Some strains may be more invasive and tend to proliferate faster, potentially diminishing the effectiveness of the biological filter. To prevent this, add 4ml of Xepta Bac per 100 liters of aquarium water once a week.

To address the carbon source deficit, the introduction of NP-Out is recommended. NP-Out provides various carbon sources, ensuring bacteria have all the necessary elements for an effective nitrogen cycle, ultimately reducing both NO3 and PO4. Proper skimming equipment is essential for effective nutrient reduction.

The dosage of NP-Out can be adjusted based on NO3 levels according to the following table, particularly if the goal is to maintain a low-nutrient aquarium:

It is advised not to use carbon sources other than NP-Out, as this product is specifically formulated based on the proportions of strains present in Xepta Bac and contains compounds that efficiently metabolize ammonia.
